Stari Grad is one of the oldest towns on the island of Hvar in Croatia, located on the northern coast. It is a historic town that has its roots in ancient Greek civilization. We stopped for one night at the local marina.

Stari Grad is an extraordinary town full of history and fascinating stories. Here are a few curiosities about this charming place:

  1. The oldest town on Hvar: Stari Grad is one of the oldest towns in Croatia, founded by the Greeks in 384 BC as Faros. Its name "Stari Grad" means "Old Town" in Croatian.

  1. Stari Grad Plain: This is a unique agricultural area that has remained virtually unchanged since the times of the ancient Greeks. In 2008, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Olive and grape cultivation has been carried out on the same plots for over 2400 years.
  2. Tvrdalj Palace: The famous poet Petar Hektorović built this beautiful Renaissance palace, which also served as his fortress. Tvrdalj is surrounded by a wall with a garden, a fish pond, and a pigeon loft, reflecting Hektorović's love for nature.
  3. Churches and Monasteries: In Stari Grad, there are many historic churches and monasteries, including the Church of St. Stephen and the Dominican monastery, which has valuable collections of manuscripts, incunabula, and paintings.

  1. Old City Walls: A part of the ancient city walls is still visible in the town, reminding us of the turbulent past of Stari Grad.
  2. Local Festivals: The city is alive with culture and traditions. During the summer, numerous festivals are organised, including the Faros Marathon, which is one of the oldest amateur running events on the island.

Stari Grad is a place that combines a rich history, the beauty of nature, and vibrant traditions, making it an ideal travel destination for any lover of culture and history.
