Pripiat is a city in Ukraine that was established on 4 February 1970 as a settlement for the workers of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This is what it looked like in its heyday. In the following photos, you will see what it looked like 30 years after the evacuation.

It is located about 4 km from the power plant, on the right bank of the Pripyat River

The city developed rapidly and was granted municipal rights in 1979. Before the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, Pripyat had a population of around 50,000 residents. On 26 April 1986, an explosion occurred in the fourth reactor of the power plant, causing massive radioactive contamination. The following day, 27 April, the evacuation of residents began, lasting from 14:00 to 16:30. Approximately 50,000 residents had to leave their homes in a very short time.

After the evacuation, the city was abandoned and has since been known as the "ghost town". Currently, Pripyat is located in a closed zone. To get here, one must cross numerous checkpoints.

We passed through special gates where our radiation levels were checked.

Dosimeters - radiation counters are also essential.

During our visit to the city, we had complete freedom to explore, and we visited, among other places

  • Bloki mieszkalne
  • Cafe Nero
  • Pocztę
  • Szpital
  • Stadion miejski wraz z parkiem rozrywki

Pripyat, a city that was once bustling with life, is now almost completely consumed by nature. Over the last 30 years, nature has reclaimed its territory – buildings are overgrown with vegetation, and the streets are filled with trees and shrubs. In the photo below, one of the main streets of the city.

The city has lost its character, resembling more of a forest than a former urban settlement. Pripyat has become a symbol of how quickly nature can reclaim its territory when people disappear. It is both fascinating and sad to see how a city that was once home to thousands of people is now almost completely engulfed by wild nature.
