During our visit to Torremolinos, we decided to explore the area. We heard about this attraction on TikTok and YouTube. This confirmed our suspicions that it's not worth listening to others. But more on that later....
Colomares Castle, also known as Castillo de Colomares, is a unique structure located in Benalmádena, Spain. It is a monument that was built between 1987 and 1994 by Dr Esteban Martín Martín in honour of the life and adventures of Christopher Columbus.
Here are some interesting facts about this castle:
- Largest Columbus monument: This is the largest monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus in the world, covering an area of approximately 1,500 square metres.
- Smallest church: The castle houses the smallest church in the world, measuring just 1.96 square metres.
- Detail of workmanship: The castle contains numerous sculptures and decorations, including representations of Columbus' three ships: the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María.
- Symbolism: Various symbols have been used in the castle's construction, such as the head of a bronze horse, which represents the Spanish sailor Martín Alonso Pinzón.
Colomares Castle, despite its original concept, unfortunately often disappoints visitors. Its construction can seem a bit tacky and unimpressive compared to other historical buildings in Europe.
The castle itself is small, which can be disappointing for those expecting a majestic fortress. In addition, the large number of tourists makes it difficult to enjoy a leisurely tour and fully appreciate the architectural details.
Overall, Colomares Castle, despite its unique features, may not meet the expectations of those looking for a more authentic and majestic castle experience.
