Rancon is a small but incredibly charming village in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, about 30 km north of Limoges. The population is around 500 people. Here, you will find a 12th-century fortified church, a Romanesque chapel dedicated to St. Sebastian, a mysterious "lantern of the dead" from the 12th century, and the remains of a Roman bridge over the Gartempe River. However, none of these attractions interested us. What drew us to the village was a small, local restaurant.

Le Georges Bar, Restaurant & Chambres tA charming place in the very heart of the town, at 3 Place Georges Bonnet. This place has an excellent reputation – the average rating is 4.6 out of 5 on many platforms.

We were intrigued by one, single dish among those they serve - frog legs! We have always wanted to try them. So, we took the opportunity during our trip to France to sample this delicacy.

We went alone: Me, Ancia and Zosia.

More about why this window is so dirty is here

We went inside, quickly met the owner, who pointed us to a table and ... it got strange. First, we waited about 10 minutes for the drinks menu so we could order something to drink. When we finally received it, no one showed any interest in us for the next few, several minutes. The only waitress in the restaurant was avoiding us like the plague because she didn't speak English!

Finally, we managed to order something to drink, although it wasn't easy. This place has a really small menu (which is a plus!) and even so, the waitress had trouble understanding what we wanted.

But that's not important, we received our drinks after a while and the owner came to us. She spoke excellent English because she was from... Wales! She apologised for the wait and brought us the correct menu. We were only interested in the starters.

We told the owner that we had always wanted to try frog legs... she just smiled and immediately suggested... snails as well. And although we had eaten those before, we still wanted to see how they make them in France. Zosia, probably the only hungry one, also ordered herself a hamburger.

The owner warned that the order might take about 15 minutes and went to the kitchen.

After about 10 minutes, she returned: first were the snails and Zosia's hamburger:

and after a while we got what we came here for: frog legs!

Returning to the snails, it is worth noting how they were served:

On a special dish called escargot. It has characteristic indentations – usually six – that hold the snail shells in place and prevent the garlic butter from spilling out. We also received special tongs and a little fork. The shells were very hot, so we had to hold them with the tongs and then use that funny little fork to scoop the snail out of its shell.

The dish was good, although in my opinion, the whole flavour came from the garlic butter and spices; the snail itself was just a rubbery thing..

As for frog legs... (that's the picture Zosia sent to the group)

...were brilliant! Something that at first glance looks like undercooked chicken wings tastes amazing! Delicious white meat that tastes like a combination of chicken and... fish!

See how we liked it in this film, completely unedited - I just set up the camera and recorded our reactions

We are glad that we visited this place. Despite the initial confusion, once we got to know the owners and tried their food... we regretted that we couldn't spend more time there. We recommend this place to all of you!
